Enhancing geology studies with GeoLab

Enabling geology through digital innovation

Adapting to change

Until recently, geology has involved going out into the field to study rocks and soil in a very hands-on way. Yet certain rocks are very difficult to reach, and subsurface data is not always available. The challenge lies in visualizing and analyzing this data. In addition, the mining industry and the study of geology rely increasingly on 3D modeling techniques that are constantly evolving. This means that educational objectives must also evolve to keep pace, while teaching methods need to adapt to integrate these advanced digital tools.

Geography innovation center

GeoLab is a digital innovation center that provides L’institut Polytechnique UniLaSalle  students with the high-tech equipment they need to work on geoscience projects and conduct research. Offering 30 workstations, GeoLab is also used for classes involving software that requires huge processing power. The main areas of focus include 3D modeling (from crystals at the micrometer scale to field models spanning several kilometers), digital and analog simulation, 3D printing, and virtual reality.

In geology, we're often required to work on areas that are hard to visualize. The 3D modeling tools available in the GeoLab allow us to understand these areas more clearly and explore new angles.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Adopted by all United Nations Member States, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. La Fondation Dassault Systèmes GeoLab supports three of these goals: Quality Education, Life on Land and Partnerships for the Goals.

Dassault Systèmes La Fondation is proud to support GeoLab UniLaSalle

L’institut Polytechnique UniLaSalle provides, manages and develops higher education courses, research, and initial and continuing training as well as work-integrated learning at its own facilities. UniLaSalle's mission is to provide high-quality training, help create and disseminate knowledge, offer support for industry, contribute to the development of the local community, and strengthen its influence and reputation across Europe.
